A source of fascination since time immemorial, Mount Olympus, the highest peak in Greece, is one of the most popular summits for hikers (and a lot of non-hikers if truth be told) from all over the world. Just the name is enough to conjure up the epic tales of Greek mythology we all grew up with, but Olympus is more than that: it’s a challenging yet rewarding hike, with unforgettable views to spare along the way.
My most recent climb to Mytikas this past November has been a great reminder of that, and it has also inspired me to share with you my guide with the best tips I know to help you prepare and make the most out of your hike - should you decide to take on this challenge!

Let’s dive right in:
Preparation and Planning
The trekking season on Mount Olympus runs from May to the end of October, depending on the weather. It’s a very popular hike so if you’re looking to spend time on the refuges make sure to plan ahead!
Choosing the Right Route:
Mount Olympus has several routes, but the most common ones are from Prionia in the north or Litochoro in the south. This time, we chose the route starting from the Christakis Refuge due to time constraints. If you have time, however, I highly recommend spending time in the refuges on Olympus, especially “Giosos Apostolidis” on the Muses’ Plateau. It’s a hiking staple and one of the highlights of the trip. I have met some amazing people, had some great conversations, and enjoyed delicious food!

Physical Preparation:
Please note that Mount Olympus is not a beginner's climb – physical fitness is key. My recommendation for you is to hike regularly before the trip, and also consider training for endurance. For first-timers especially, going with a guide is highly recommended as well, more so if you plan to go to Mytikas.
Weather and Timing:
The best time to climb is from May to October, when the weather is more predictable and the refuges are open. Even so, you should be prepared for sudden weather changes and chilly or stormy conditions in higher altitudes.

The Ascent
Starting Point – Christakis Refuge
The trail from the Christakis refuge is, in my opinion, one of the best routes for a time-constrained, yet rewarding Mount Olympus experience. The road ahead is tough, but definitely manageable for anyone with good fitness.
Getting to Christakis Refuge will require a 4x4 but it’s a fun drive through the mountainous terrain. Once you’re all set and ready to go the first part of the climb awaits!
My advice for this part is to make sure you keep a steady pace as you make the steep climb through mixed terrain to avoid an early burnout.
Several points on your trek offer spectacular views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. Take them all in and keep an eye out for wildlife. Wild mountain goats and birds of prey call the mountain their home and if you’re as lucky as we were you can even stumble upon a majestic herd of wild horses!
Midway Point
As you get higher, the terrain becomes more rocky. As the areas get more and more exposed there is a bit of scrambling involved.
At this point, you'll start to see the summit in the distance: keep your eyes on the prize but bear in mind that there’s still a ways to go, and a tough stretch still ahead.

The Summit
The most challenging part of the route is the final push to the summit. For this part you will absolutely need a helmet so make sure there’s one at hand. Make your way to the top by watching your footing carefully, as loose rocks can be slippery.
Congratulations! You’ve made it to the top! You now get to enjoy the indescribable feeling of standing on top of the highest peak in Greece and reap your reward in the form of a jaw-dropping panoramic view of Thessaloniki, Chalkidiki and the Aegean Sea in the distance.
Take your time to get back and keep in mind not to rush the descent, as it's technical and tiring - and that’s it! The memory is now yours to keep and cherish forever.
Time: About 6-7 hours, depending on pace.

Essential Tips
-Good hiking boots are a must— don’t skimp on quality footwear.
-Always carry sufficient water: make sure you have at least 2 liters with you (or possibly more if it’s a hot day) and snacks to keep your energy up (you can try my chocolate orange oat bars recipe for a tasty and nutrient-packed option)
-Pack weather-appropriate gear, keeping in mind that temperature changes drastically with altitude.
-Safety first: if you're hiking alone, let someone know your route and expected time of return.
-If you have time after head over to Ourlias waterfalls for the ultimate recovery!
